Reyes Fine Art on Location

Today marks 90 days on location in the suburbs of Detroit, MI. After working days building sets for the feature film "Batman vs Superman", I've been diligently planning and producing new paintings at night in an impromptu studio I put together in my hotel room. Here's a little insider tour for you…

The setup.
The tools.
The palette.
The action and the output. Pictured is "Angeles Sky".
While the act of painting itself becomes a spontaneous free-for-all, the planning in terms of size, base colors, etc. is not. These are some roadmaps for cityscapes based on trips to Paris, Montreal, and Barcelona.
Sometimes I draw out the compositions, sometimes I don't. In the case of these three, I did!

The Aero Series / Art In Situ

In situ [in sahy-toois a Latin phrase that translates literally to "in position". Art in situ to me means visualizing the link between art and its environment beyond the artist's studio. I've created some composite images of my work "in position" to get a better appreciation of its place out in the world.

The Aero Series / Art In Context

Earlier versions of my website, along with countless other artists, typically presented our work in its "finished" state and it ends up simply as a rectangular image on the screen of your computer, tablet, or phone. But in the real world,  an artwork is almost never displayed alone and certainly has a relationship to its environment, whether to the wall it hangs on or to the people viewing it there. My current website attempts to break free from the rectangular confines, curate a white "digital" wall, and add more context to enhance your viewing experience.

The hunt for new images to paint in the Aero Series encourages me to always look up (at the sky), out (at the clouds), and down (to the Earth) wherever and whenever I travel.
The Aero Series captures realistically painted abstract views and abstractly painted real views.
The imagery of the clouds and Earth unify the Aero Series, but so to do the colors chosen to portray the images themselves.

The Making of the Aero Series

Reminding us of places we've traveled, exciting us about where we may go next, and helping us to remember to take it all in with our eyes along the way. These are the themes of my AERO SERIES of artwork. These videos take you through the steps of my creative process.

Tribe Series 1 - 4

The following four series were seemingly born in an instant on March 26, 2009 (see the green Tribe Series #1, which was the first). In reality, the idea, that moment, was really the convergence of the prior 7 years of exploration of the figure, the still life, the landscape. These paintings run the gamut of these subjects...they sometimes are narrative, sometimes purely design, and mostly just plain fun to create! I compose and paint them always in groups of four, and now that there are 4 series, I wanted to present them to you in their intended groupings.
