Palette Colors of the Masters

During my recent trip to Europe, I used the Brushes app on my iPad to capture the colors of works of masters like Cezanne, Courbet, Zurbarron, etc. These swatches are like the DNA of a masterpiece, and my attempt to synthesize complex, and often extremely large, compositions into a simpler, more understandable form.

It was an amazing (almost surreal) experience to be standing directly across from these works trying to penetrate and unravel their mystery, and my attempts often drew a curious crowd of museum visitors trying to sort out what was going on, and get their heads around the fact I was using my iPad to do it!

These are the color swatches I picked by eye and drew by hand in the Brushes app on my iPad while getting up close and personal to masterworks in some of the finest museums in Europe.
